My former neighbor Susan and I sparked a friendship through my spiked cider and a snow day. When it was time for my family and I to move to a different neighborhood, Susan and I promised to be intentional about spending time with each other, so our families promised to get together as much as possible, even after the move.
Our favorite meal as two families is barbecue. Summer, winter, spring doesn’t matter the season. Susan introduced me to the best BBQ rub- Pappy’s Rub. It’s amazing on anything and everything; steaks, burgers, veggies, etc. It’s the all spice of grilling. Susan’s husband, Terry, is famous for his tri-tip and grilled squash, both topped with Pappy’s rub.
When it comes to the sauces, who doesn’t love Sweet Baby Ray’s? This classic sauce may not be homemade in my kitchen, but the savory flavor of Sweet Baby Ray’s is absolutely undeniable. My husband, Phillip puts it on everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. He even makes his own salad dressing with it.
During the week, we have one night that we make a very tasty steak in our cast iron skillet or on the grill. The sweet, yummy, gourmet Yoshidas has been at my family’s table for years. We marinate the steaks in this for roughly four hours. I am the head cook when it comes to the cast iron skillet, but when the grill is needed, it’s Phillip’s time to shine (grill: Charcoal Weber). My one attempt at grilling ended up as Chinese takeout from Delivery Dudes, so I let Phillip work his magic on the grill while I do mine on the cast iron skillet.
Stay tuned for my favorite BBQ meals including meat, sides and all. For now, experiment with these sauces and rubs to see which add flavor to your life!
