I love traveling, but when my soul gets a little road weary, there is nothing better than a little BBQ outside on a porch in my hometown of Nashville. As one of the top cities for good ole fashioned American BBQ, Nashville has an excess of dining joints to make your mouth water and keep you coming back for more. I’ll crave anything from ribs and pulled pork to brisket, shoulder, and even BBQ tacos. Growing up here, I’ve experienced plenty of delicious and authentic BBQ, and I’ve often found it difficult to decide where I want to go when these cravings come on. Below, I’m sharing my reviews for my favorite BBQ joints in town and the reasons why I love ‘em. What’s your favorite in Nashville or beyond?
1. Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint
They’ve recently opened a Martin’s BBQ on Belmont Blvd. not too long ago, but I grew up going to the original Martin’s in Nolensville. Martin’s is best known for being the only whole-hog joint in Nashville; they even have “Whole Hog Saturdays”, which are quite the production. And that’s not even the tip of the iceberg on what they have to offer! I love their vinegar-based sauce (my fave), AMAZING french fries, and homemade sides! Try it for yourself at any of their four locations, and be on the lookout for a Martin’s opening up downtown this May!
2. Edley’s Bar-B-Que
If you live in Nashville, you know and love Edley’s. Their modern southern ambiance offers plenty of outdoor seating which is even dog-friendly. Disney pup loves to go and have a little treat herself! The overall experience at this BBQ joint gets an A+ in my book. It’s different from Martin’s because of the smoky flavors and spice. My favorite side is the cornbread and beans!
I remember the first time I ever ate here. My family was moving into a new house, and my dad and I were sent out to pick up supper at Corky’s. When you go to get something with my dad, it’s always an adventure! We drove around listening to Garrson Keillor while I sipped on an Icee, and then we casually drove our way through Brentwood to Corky’s. We picked up our meal and then headed to our new home for our very first dinner there. That said, I have a little soft spot for this local BBQ chain– not only for their tasty goods but also because of their grab ‘n go concept. And, if you have some time and want to sit and eat, their folksy space with a ’50s vibe makes for a fun and laid back meal!
4. Whitts Barbeque
This joint is similar to Corky’s with the whole drive-through aspect. Located near Belle Meade, they’ve been named “Best of Nashville” in the Nashville Scene every year since 1988. I crave their BBQ sauce and all their delicious, tangy flavors.
5. Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous
Plot twist! This joint may not be in Nashville, but it’s my favorite place to eat BBQ in Memphis with my family. Rendezvous is a neat scene– you’ll find its entrance in an alley, and the dining room in a basement. The waiters have been the same for years, and the only way they serve their ribs is dry. You can even order some of their food online, and they will ship you their famous BBQ! After enjoying some, be sure to walk over to the Peabody Hotel to get a piece of delicious cheesecake and see the ducks.
After writing this post, I’m definitely in need of some BBQ. How about you? Is your mouth watering yet?! What’s your favorite type of BBQ? Carolina, Texan, Kansas, Southern? Noms.
