One of my favorite things about traveling is exploring the cities and towns that we are visiting. Each one is full of unique people, history, food, and SHOPPING! With that in mind, I’ve decided it would be fun to start giving away little treasures I find in the few cities I visit. My first giveaway is from Wichita, KS, where at one time it was against the law to serve ice cream on a cherry pie! I’m glad that’s not the case anymore. 😉
If you’re ever in the area, be sure to head downtown. Downtown Wichita has a fascinating historic district and is full of renovated buildings from the late 1800’s. The Museum of World Treasures in tucked into the center, and surrounded by tons of open air and rooftop patios that serve unique food. For lunch, my family and I ate at a renovated restaurant that once was an old coffin factory– yes a coffin factory! There was an adjoining music venue called The Brickyard, which is an open air bar and music venue, that features beautiful murals on the old factory walls. When the building was a factory, this section burned down, except for the outside walls, making it a truly unique open air patio.
After lunch, we decided to check out a couple of the local shops. We found a new boutique that had recently opened for business. The inside of the shop, Handpicked Los Angeles, had exposed brick featuring interesting art, and at a nice price point. Score! Even though it is a women’s boutique, Penelopi managed to find a pair of fabulous sunglasses for and a t-shirt for $35– she is a good shopper! I found my giveaway items here, a #Boss notebook and a coloring booking that was hand drawn by Emily Miller.
Next door to Handpicked, was a trading post called Sandbar Trading. Interestingly, in the 1860’s, Wichita started as a trading post. What I love about a trading post is all the unique Native American jewelry. I am always on the lookout for White Buffalo Turquoise. Sandbar Trading had three rings with my favorite turquoise; one for Phillip, one for Penelopi, and one for me! Penelopi took them up to the cashier, and on our way to the counter, we spotted a beautiful antique box with light blue velvet covering the inside. The box once belonged to Juanita Baker, who was a nurse who helped many Native Americans. She sadly had no heirs to her estate, and her 17,000 estate pieces went to several different auction houses and Sandbar Trading. I am thankful we are able to have one of her treasures!
To enter to win this beautiful hand drawn coloring book and #BOSS notebook (pictured below), all you have to do is comment on this blog. I’d love to hear about your favorite places to travel, or where you’re visiting this summer. I’m so thrilled to be giving away these items; good luck to everybody who enters!
